Background

In 2018 I teamed up with fintech consultancy 11:FS and RBS (Royal Bank of Scotland) to explore how the incumbent bank might compete with a new wave of 'challenger' banks.

To be successful the project was funded in their "innovation hub". A group of different teams pushing boundaries without constraints.

What resulted was an entirely new, and separate, entity to the main organisation. A bank account for small businesses that operates under it's own brand, but with financial backing from the mothership.

Role

On this project I was a Product Designer.

Team

Product Manager, Product Designer, Tech Lead, iOS Engineer, Platform Engineer

Approach

Product

Working closely with the Product Manger, we set out to unpick what would help small businesses manage their finances.

We established a User Research process and conducted a number of interviews.

The outcome was a need for those small businesses to have a more encompassing view of their finances. A balance wasn't enough, but a view of how that balance has changed over time and a prediction of the future would be useful.

Design

Many banks at the time had lacklustre design. Our goal wasn't flashy or fancy, but usable and utilitarian.

I opted for clear information over flare.
